- Description
- Magnum Photos 75 was a 2022 anniversary project that brought photographs from the Magnum archive into a tokenized publication context. This record concerns the five Works now accessioned through Conflict at Its Edges.

6529 Network Museum, Curatorial Research · Edition 1.0.0 · Published 9 August 2026 · Research through 9 August 2026 · Publication record and suggested citation
An archive enters the blockchain
Magnum Photos 75 gave historical photographs a second circulation through curatorial selection, serial tokens, metadata, image pointers, and network publication. The photographs had already passed through assignments, archives, prints, books, exhibitions, and captions. The 2022 project placed each frame inside a new chain of identifiers: collection number, curation field, token, metadata object, image URI, edition language, and transaction history.1
The numbered edition adds a token manifestation to the photograph's older histories. At an observed block, the token identifies metadata and an image pointer; the contract's administrative controls allow those URIs to change. The underlying work continues through other manifestations in estates, print collections, books, exhibitions, and agency archives.
Curatorial history
The archived official launch page presents a first collection in Magnum’s seventy-fifth anniversary year. It describes 76 images, six drops between 28 June and 12 July 2022, and selection by photographer and Obscura co-founder Alejandro Cartagena. The same announcement also uses 75-image wording. Both statements remain part of the project’s publication history.2
The issuer metadata describes three curations and 225 image positions. The second selection was presented in dialogue with Azu Nwagbogu, founder and director of the African Artists’ Foundation. Nwagbogu’s account shifts attention from the familiar “decisive moment” toward an “indecisive moment”: photographs charged with anticipation, feeling, intention, and several possible readings.3
The first selection’s language emphasizes the endurance of historical photographs. The Museum reads that emphasis as a concern with formal and narrative endurance: a frame survives because its structure and the history carried by it continue to generate attention. That phrase describes the Museum’s interpretation of the launch material; it is not a title assigned to Cartagena’s selection.4
The selected proposal contains one first-register token and four second-register tokens:
| Token | Artist | Date / place | Issuer curation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Token127 | ArtistDavid Seymour | Date / place1952 · Negev | Issuer curation2/ |
| Token145 | ArtistLarry Towell | Date / place1986 · Suchitoto, El Salvador | Issuer curation2/ |
| Token97 | ArtistMicha Bar-Am | Date / place1989 · Jerusalem | Issuer curation2/ |
| Token44 | ArtistMoisés Saman | Date / place2011 · Tripoli | Issuer curation1/ |
| Token104 | ArtistLorenzo Meloni | Date / place2016 · Palmyra | Issuer curation2/ |
The split belongs to the token records. The five-Work relation was formed later by the donor. The reviewed public records contain no statement or evidence that Magnum Photos, Alejandro Cartagena, Azu Nwagbogu, or any of the five artists endorsed the resulting group.5
Counts and publication uncertainty
The project’s public counts require source-specific wording. The archived launch page uses both 75 and 76 for the first release. Direct metadata describes three curations and 225 image positions. A retained Foundation snapshot displays 148 items, while the local proposal dossier reports 148 live tokens at finalized block 25,690,178. Those observations describe distinct publication states and methods. Neither establishes a definitive total of issued tokens or confirms completion of a third curation.6
That uncertainty is part of the project’s material history. Network publication produces exact identifiers while also exposing the difference between an announced plan, a metadata sequence, a marketplace view, and an independently enumerated chain state.
Edition, archive, and rights
Each target token links to JSON metadata and an Arweave JPEG through a common Ethereum ERC-721 contract. Token number, sequence, curation, archive reference, metadata pointer, image pointer, and transfer history are technical publication facts. “1 of 1” describes the token edition. It does not describe the total number of photographic manifestations or resolve the copyright history of the image.
The All Rights Reserved notice attached to the token records remains a rights
statement. The Museum interprets ordinary credited institutional display,
publication, and accessibility in accession, Collection, and scholarship
contexts as permissible. That interpretation does not transfer copyright or
grant commercial or general reproduction, derivative, licensing, download, or
AI-training rights. The Museum cites the historical Wave and token sources with
their artist and Magnum credits; the token-linked renditions are not described
as preservation masters (S09–S16; S38).
Relation to Conflict at Its Edges
Conflict at Its Edges joins one 1/ work to four 2/ works and reads them
through borders, access, captions, marked and damaged sites, and documentary
afterlives. Seymour’s border patrol, Towell’s armed presence in a church,
Bar-Am’s smoke-filled Western Wall, Saman’s caption-qualified interior, and
Meloni’s Palmyra ruin remain five independent Works with distinct caption and
archive histories.
Magnum Photos 75 supplies the project context and the technical route through which these photographs now circulate. The donor supplies the grouping. The Museum’s essay supplies the interpretation. Keeping those authorships separate allows the project’s networked edition to become part of the photographs’ afterlives without turning it into evidence of an upstream curatorial intention.
The proposal’s current Museum status is completed gift; accessioned into the
permanent Collection as 6529NM.. The five Works remain linked to
Magnum Photos 75 as their project context while their Museum accession and
individual object identities remain distinct (S37).
