Close looking

Hard contrasts organize the frame: black windows, pale walls, a lamp’s small flare, and graffiti gathered across the surface like a second architecture. The slogan sits within a place of repair, closure, and re-use. Its capital letters fill the wall while the building’s decay keeps time around them. The camera holds the site at a deliberate distance, presenting a public view shaped by history. Barred openings and uncertain routes make the declaration legible as an invitation-shaped mark in a site whose access has changed over time.

Artist’s account

Pan’s submission places the scene at Berlin’s RAW-Gelände in Friedrichshain and connects its railway-repair history, post-reunification abandonment, squatting, cultural use, and later redevelopment. The artist identifies the photograph as made during the site’s autonomous-cultural period.

Curatorial interpretation

The photograph separates access to a site from authority over its signs. Painted words make a place legible through use and inscription, while ownership and redevelopment reorganize the same ground. The slogan survives as an image; its survival leaves authorship and permission open.

Context

RAW-Gelände’s public history supports the broad sequence from railway repair works to temporary cultural use and redevelopment. The exact building and graffiti authorship remain open in the public record.
