Close looking

The photograph looks upward into a form that is both bowl and aperture. Water radiates from a centre hidden below the frame, and repeating flutes pull the eye toward the bright opening. The structure disappears into pattern. A small patch of sky remains at the top of the image, while water and light follow curves that resemble a flower, throat, or mouth.

Artist’s account

Zoku identifies the image as the spillway funnel of San Roque Dam and describes it as an automated system that regulates excess pressure. The submission connects its 1944 expansion to a broader idea of infrastructure solving problems through automatic release; no individual permission event appears in the account.

Curatorial interpretation

No operator, hinge, or warning sign appears. Regulation is conveyed by the fan of water, the repeated ribs, and the circle of sky. The photograph turns a large structure into an enveloping pattern whose purpose is legible only through the flow it shapes.

Context

Public technical material supports San Roque Dam’s site and a 1944 dam phase. The precise component, viewpoint, operating conditions, and claim of wholly human-independent regulation remain attributed to the submission.
