Close looking

Black fabric gathers around the torso like a narrow aperture. Its folds give the photograph’s border a physical edge, and the crop concentrates attention on the body’s relation to visibility. The figure is present through exposure and withheld through form; clothing decides how much can be seen while the body’s vulnerability remains in view.

Artist’s account

The submission describes a body shaped by decisions about clothing, movement, and visibility, and locates the work within a personal realization about bodily ownership. The artist identifies the source file as a digital photograph with Lightroom colour work and Photoshop background retouching. The public evidence does not establish identity, adult status, self-portrait status, or the scope of consent; no private instrument is retained in the Museum record. The Museum therefore presents the image only in its selected-work context, without making those claims or granting reuse.

Curatorial interpretation

The folds do more than frame the torso: they make the body the photograph’s only exposed surface. The absent face prevents recognition, while the close crop intensifies physical presence. Visibility and anonymity are held together by the same black fabric.
