Hugo Faz is a São Paulo–based photographer, filmmaker, performance artist, and image-maker. His practice moves between directed photography, self-portraiture, performance, and moving image, using the body as a site where public rules and private self-expression meet. The artist site and LensCulture profile describe an artist interested in censorship, sexuality, social identity, and the boundary between public and private space.
Faz’s photographs often stage a situation as much as they record one. A body is placed into a charged setting, then held against the surrounding systems of speed, spectatorship, or permission. Long exposure, staged gesture, theatrical interiors, costume, and the deliberate display or concealment of the body become formal tools. Projects such as 366 NuDays of Hugo and 100 NUDE Shoots establish a sustained engagement with self-representation and the social body; public professional profiles also connect the practice to performance and film.
The two selected works show how that practice moves from the city to the portrait room. In the Artist in the Open Sea, a performer in a white tub or boat holds a precise, vulnerable shape inside the blurred speed of São Paulo traffic. The image places transit and artistic autonomy in the same field. In Sina Beizavi in Brazil, the sitter reclines on an ornate chair while holding a small booklet or document. The theatrical pose and the object’s presence bring welcome, visibility, and administrative proof into the same frame. The work page uses “the sitter”; personal biography and identifiers remain outside the artist profile.
