NEW LISTING ROOTS. Wedding Ceremony I wanted to document an old Ukrainian wedding rite, one I invented myself. We drove out to a forest at the edge of a field while it was still light and picked a clearing. Then my wife said: “Look, up there on the hill.” About 300 or 400 metres away, a huge wolf was coming down the slope. “It’s far away,” I said, and we started building the fire. The shoot was not easy. My wife pressed the shutter on a timer and ran into the frame, while I splashed lighter fluid onto the fire so it would flare up at the right moment. We managed exactly two takes. Then, very close, we heard a loud wolf’s howl. I can tell you, friends, we have never packed so fast in our lives. We put out the fire with water, ran naked to the car, jumped in and only then breathed out, our hearts pounding. Our ancestors believed a wedding binds two people into one fate. That evening, it worked: we were never more of a single organism than in that sprint to the car. Art as a ritual that suddenly becomes real.
