Épinal, 19th century. The Imagerie Pellerin carves images into pear wood, colors them by stencil and sells them for a few sous in every village in France. A meme machine before the word existed. This is plate no. 22, La Famille Impériale, engraved by François Georgin and photographed at the Musée de l'Image in Épinal. The imperial clan has left its frames. Fourteen members of the 6529 family moved in, each with their name and role on the ribbon, Punk 6529 in Napoleon's place. The faces stay exactly as they live on-chain: pixels, 3D, vector, cartoon. Only the engraved necks were colored to match, in flat, hard-edged tints, the way Pellerin's colorists worked with their stencils. Two centuries apart, one body. The Memes of Production run around the margin like an engraved border, from Seize the Memes of Production to Brain. The OM mark and the 6529 Gradient are blind-embossed into the paper, where old publishers stamped their sheets. Épinal's myth served a throne. This one is meant to take it apart. Georgin's plate is in the public domain, and this card is CC0. From the commons, back to the commons. It all started in 2023 when two meme bros visited the Imagerie d’Épinal museum.
