V2_'s About the Archive opens by limiting its own authority. The archive documents V2_ history, includes only material with a direct relation to V2_, and says that completeness and correctness are not guaranteed. It invites additions and corrections through the editorial team. The archive includes events, people, artworks, essays, interviews, publications, old websites, video, audio, photographs, and a library.

That scope statement is itself a preservation record. It tells a researcher what the archive is trying to do, what it cannot promise, and how a later person can challenge it.

Demonstrated practices

1. Migration history is part of archive description

V2_ reports that online content was migrated from an older archive in 2010 after the old software created a security problem. It identifies a DVD/disk image route and notes that some image and movie material was excluded. Its rights statement gives CC BY-SA as a general position while preserving author- and photographer-specific exceptions.

2. Unstable-media research produces reusable structures

The 2003 Capturing Unstable Media project used the case studies whisper and DataCloud 2.0 to address documentation and preservation of unstable media. Its recommendations cover documentation strategy, formal modeling, metadata, and archival interoperability. Capturing Unstable Media

The proposed structure is valuable because it treats documentation as an interoperability problem. A future archive should be able to understand the work, its relations, and its preservation decisions without depending on one interface.

3. The archive is distributed across institutional relationships

V2_'s account of the Network for the Archiving of Design and Digital Culture, launched 17 December 2020, describes a model that is centralized where needed and decentralized where possible. Close reading of public scholarship

V2_ writes about archives through declared incompleteness. The archive page is an editorial policy; Capturing Unstable Media is a research report with methods and recommendations; the forty-year reflection is a conversation about loss, selection, and construction. The community survey of iconic works is useful as program and archival input, but its voting result should not be turned into a collection-significance metric.

What the Museum should adopt

• Give every public archive a scope statement naming inclusion rule, exclusions, date range, authority, correction route, and current completeness.
• Record migration trigger, old software, retained disk image or export, excluded material, new route, license, and known access defects.
• Use stable Museum identifiers and typed relationships among works, events, artists, publications, people, captures, and preservation actions.
• Publish correction and supersession paths so the archive can become more accurate without erasing its earlier state.
• Treat distributed storage and partner archives as named custody/access relationships with named custody and access roles.

Where the analogy ends

V2_'s archive is program history and institutional memory. It does not establish title, custody, accession, condition, or conservation completion. The current archive route returned HTTP 200 in a focused check but rendered the site's page-not-found state in browser inspection on 2026-08-04; that content-level access defect belongs in the record alongside the working article and catalogue routes.
