Institutional profile

The 2012 conference transmediale Unarchived made the archive itself a program subject. Its public account brings together a 25-year institutional history, archive digitization, online dissemination, and the question of how curators can return archival material to interpretation and circulation. transmediale Unarchived

This is a useful starting point for the Museum because transmediale's archive and program are interdependent. The archive records how a festival and its publication forms changed as internet art, software art, online programs, and hybrid events changed around it.

1. A long program history is made browseable by edition

The legacy archive presents annual festival history from 1988 through 2020 in a year-and-edition structure, with special projects and related material. 2. Publication is a continuing institutional record

3. Program formats and original files remain part of the history

The current history records the 2021–2022 for refusal program, including an Almanac updated monthly at the full moon and a microcomputer-based ceramic portal with original files. The record therefore links event duration, online publication, technical format, and retained source material. History

Close reading of public scholarship

transmediale's writing changes register with its subject. The archive overview is chronological and navigational; Unarchived is reflective and asks what archival work does; the journal is issue-based and discursive; the current history tracks shifts in medium and event format. Together these forms produce institutional memory without pretending that every program item has the same status or completeness.

What the Museum should adopt

• Give festivals, commissions, publications, online programs, residencies, archives, and artworks separate records with typed relationships.
• Preserve edition, date, format, original files, migration history, current access route, and later interpretation for every significant program.
• Treat publications as durable research objects with authors, contributors, issue/date, source files, revision history, and suggested citation.
• Keep an archive's historical cutoff, missing material, reconstructed pages, and current access defects visible.
• Record program material that is temporarily online as a lifecycle state with an explicit preservation status.

Where the analogy ends

transmediale's archive is festival history and public scholarship. The reviewed material does not establish title, accession, custody, condition, or object-level conservation. The apparent 2020 endpoint of the legacy archive and the absence of a public structured API should remain explicit. The record should carry those gaps without inference.
