*Themes and Variations*

Themes and Variations is a 2023 generative project by Vera Molnár in collaboration with Martin Grasser. Its 500 unique outputs begin with the letters N, F, and T. Each token combines the project’s fixed script with its own hash to produce one arrangement of letters, blocks, lines, colour, and texture.

From drawing to system

Molnár drew variations on the three capital letters within a square. The letters are both the project’s subject and its material. A stem can become a bar; a crosspiece can establish an interval; a repeated glyph can turn into rhythm or pattern.

The project credits Martin Grasser as collaborating artist and coder. Available accounts describe Molnár and Grasser working together on a system that governs position, scale, weight, distribution, colour, and arrangement. The collaboration joins Molnár’s drawn studies and long practice of rule-based variation to Grasser’s work with typography, letterform abstraction, and generative code.

The six-by-six grid provides a visible measure. Some outputs hold their letters close to familiar typographic forms. Others enlarge, repeat, rotate, or compress them until language gives way to blocks, bars, edges, and fields of marks. The grid, alignments, and repetitions let each departure carry formal weight.

An edition in sequence

The project’s colour logic also links one output to the next. Sotheby’s describes a rule in which one image’s background colour becomes the following image’s foreground, paired with a complementary colour. The edition can therefore be encountered as a sequence as well as a group of independent works.

Art Blocks records a fixed edition of 500. The project script is stored in eleven on-chain segments. A browser renderer combines that script with each token’s hash to produce the corresponding output. Script, hash, renderer, and image occupy different parts of the work’s technical life and are recorded separately in the Museum’s accession package.

The project was released through Sotheby’s Gen Art, powered by Art Blocks, on 26 July 2023. Sotheby’s showed generative test mints in New York before the release. Glitch Marfa presented the project in its Every 30 Days programme in 2024. The Toledo Museum of Art included four privately held outputs in Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms in 2025. These exhibitions concern the project and other outputs; the Museum has found no verified earlier exhibition of #210.

The Museum’s work

The 6529 Network Museum holds Themes and Variations #210, accessioned as 6529NM.2026.003.01. Its official PNG is a dated rendering. The live generator presents the browser-based work separately.

#210 carries all three source letters within a cobalt-blue and warm-white field. Five T forms descend through the lower-left area; a small F sits near the left edge; lines and a dense rectangular panel occupy the lower right. Large blue masses give these smaller elements their scale. The output moves from glyph to diagram to texture while remaining one balanced composition.

Token #210 is one unique output in the fixed edition of 500. Through it, visitors can study the project’s procedure, visual language, release history, and material dependencies.
