The work is not under copyright, but the Museum is subject to stated contractual restrictions. Read those terms before reusing the available file.
Museum practice
These readings describe how the Museum normally presents, studies, publishes, and cares for a lawfully acquired work. The exact rights record, artist agreements, and applicable law continue to govern each object.
- Display the work
Ordinary with recorded terms
Copyright does not bar display. The Museum follows the acquisition, donor, digitisation, cultural, or other contract that remains binding.
- Publish online
Ordinary with recorded terms
Online presentation may proceed within the contract's scope, with the restriction explained and the detailed record linked.
- Publish in print
Ordinary with recorded terms
Print use follows the contract. The public-domain status of the underlying work does not erase an agreement binding the Museum.
- Make preservation copies
Ordinary with recorded terms
Preservation may proceed within the contract's copying, access, security, and duration terms, with any limits recorded in the preservation package.
- Share an adaptation
Ordinary with recorded terms
Copyright may allow adaptation, while the contract may limit what the Museum can publish. Follow the recorded agreement.
- Make commercial use
Ordinary with recorded terms
Commercial use follows the recorded contract and any other applicable rights. The Museum should state the restriction without calling the underlying work copyrighted.
What the Museum can do
- State that copyright has expired or does not apply while linking directly to the contractual restrictions that affect reuse of the available item.
Conditions
- Provide a public link to the actual contractual restrictions.
What remains outside the term
- The restriction comes from contract, not copyright, and the statement should not imply that the contract binds everyone in every setting.
