Noncommercial use is permitted within the Museum's stated conditions. Commercial reuse needs permission or another legal basis.
Museum practice
These readings describe how the Museum normally presents, studies, publishes, and cares for a lawfully acquired work. The exact rights record, artist agreements, and applicable law continue to govern each object.
- Display the work
Within the stated purpose
Ordinary noncommercial collection display may proceed within the institution's stated permission. Credit and any object-specific conditions remain part of the presentation.
- Publish online
Within the stated purpose
A noncommercial collection page and faithful preview may proceed within the stated permission. The purpose of the particular use determines the boundary.
- Publish in print
Within the stated purpose
Genuinely noncommercial scholarship and education may proceed within the institution's conditions. Paid publishing receives a purpose-specific review.
- Make preservation copies
Within the stated purpose
Controlled preservation and migration may proceed when they fall within the noncommercial permission or another collection-care basis.
- Share an adaptation
Within the stated purpose
A noncommercial adaptation may proceed only if the institution's stated conditions cover adaptations and all other relevant rights are respected.
- Make commercial use
Separate permission or legal basis
Merchandise, advertising, image licensing, and uses primarily directed toward commercial advantage need permission or another legal basis.
What the Museum can do
- Tell visitors that noncommercial use is permitted and publish the specific conditions in the detailed object record.
Conditions
- Apply the statement only when the Museum owns the relevant right or has explicit authority from the rights holder.
What remains outside the term
- The statement is not a Creative Commons license and does not supply the detailed attribution, adaptation, or downstream terms of one.
