From above, a hard line separates dense residential roofs from a geometric field of palms.
Close looking
The boundary runs almost ruler-straight through the frame. On one side, roofs and roads make a dense, irregular surface; on the other, palm crowns repeat in ordered rows. The aerial viewpoint removes the human scale that would make the line negotiable. Land use becomes pattern, and pattern begins to look like destiny.
The plantation has the visual calm of a garden; the neighbourhood reads as a compact field of pressure. That reversal gives the image its force. An arrangement associated with custody appears orderly and lush, while ordinary freedom is rendered as crowding.
Artist’s account
Pulapa describes the ordered side as a jail facility and the other as a residential neighbourhood, asking what custody looks like when confinement resembles order and freedom resembles chaos. Those identifications remain the artist’s account; the public record leaves the facility unidentified.
Curatorial interpretation
Seen from above, access becomes a problem of viewpoint. From the ground, a wall, road, or security perimeter would organize movement; in the aerial frame, the boundary is an abstract stroke. People living on either side disappear into the diagram, leaving the viewer to consider who may see a landscape as a system and who must live inside its divisions.
